Munroe hosts baseball tourney

Team Munroe hosted the RFM Invitational Baseball Tournament July 11 through the 13th. The weather was hot and there was a threat of thunderstorms all weekend and there was also some great baseball being played.
Team Munroe played in three games and if you went by the scoreboard they were 0-3. If you went by fan support for this tournament they were undefeated.
The tournament’s purpose was first and foremost to allow some young athletes a chance to have some fun. It also was a time to hone your skills and learn a little more about how to be a team and play the game of baseball. It also is a way to raise funds to help support the programs that allow these young athletes a chance to enjoy the game of baseball.
The teams that participated in the tournament had players that were age 13-15. As I was watching Team Munroe warm-up, I looked around the dugout and the field and realized that most of the players were youngsters that I have been watching play baseball since they were eight years old. There was Hunter Suber, Dustin Watson, Kendal Weeks, Hunter Rushing and Aaron Iglesias, just to name a few, who had all played in the Dixie Youth program in Quincy. Even their coach was a familiar face. Not only had he coached in the Quincy Recreation League, he also played in the league when I coached.
No, he didn’t learn his coaching skills from me. He played for another team. Maybe a little of my love for the game rubbed off on Jimmy over the years because he sure takes up a lot of time working with these young folks and truly enjoys teaching these young athletes.
The Liberty County team coached by Wendell Shuler was the winner of the tournament followed by Tallahassee Babe Ruth, Wakulla and Tom Brown Park.
Team Munroe will be playing in the Babe Ruth Summer League in Tallahassee for the next few weeks and I will keep you up to date as to how they are doing.
In its game against Tom Brown Park Saturday morning, Munroe fell 9-4. They were led offensively by Kendall Weeks, 2-2, Dustin Watson, 2-3, Tyler Henry, 1-3, Kyler McGraw, 1-2, and Chuck Beach, 1-2.
The parents, the coach and the players would like to thank the other teams that played in the tournament and a big thank you to all who supported the tournament. As usual, a special thanks goes out to all the volunteers who worked so hard to make the weekend a success.
