Thursday morning Circuit Court Judge Jon Sjorstrom sentenced Elijah Brookins, 34, to the death penalty.
Brookins was convicted in December of 2013 in the murder of another inmate, Eric Sexton. The murder occured during the transportation of prisoners from the Jefferson Correctional Institution to the Florida Reception Center in Chipley that happened in September of 2011.
The jury was out approximately 45 minutes before bringing back the guilty verdict and brought back a 10-2 recommendation for the death penalty.
This is the second death penalty sentence in a Gadsden County courtroom within the last 15 months.
Marvin Cannon was given the death penalty in November of 2012.
