Havana Merchants Association (HMA) president Jim Kellum raised an idea a couple of weeks ago … why not take boards of plywood and paint them like Christmas cards, and line them down Havana’s streets filled with shops, calling it Christmas Card Lane? Oh, this was not an original idea … HMA members had tried a similar initiative some 15 or more years ago, and got four or five cards painted to line down US 27, but they were up for only a few days and then put away, not to be brought out again.
This time around at Kellum's urging, more than twenty-five shops, businesses and organizations are participating. Several streets in downtown Havana have cards depicting happy holiday greetings of all kinds in unique paintings done by Havana artists Joy Green and Adriene Forare. Dozens of shoppers have commented on the cards that have only been up for a few days, saying each one is so individually-designed, beautifully painted and for some like the Herald’s depicting an upside-down Santa stuck in a chimney, downright cute! It’s just one more reason to enjoy Havana’s happy holiday shopping season and the town’s unique take on Christmas, which includes one of the wackiest of events anywhere, the Havana Holiday Snow Festival and Lawn Mower Parade.
People enjoy decorating their riding mowers and golf carts like mini-floats and vying for great prizes each year. This December 14th is Havana’s 9th Lawn Mower Parade and crowds are once again expected to line the streets to see what folks have come up with this time around. In past years, there have been a pirate ship, the Red Baron’s biplane, Noah’s Ark, a fishing boat, duck hunting blind, police car, toy train, cigar factory, gingerbread house and many other creative spins on the humble riding mower workhorse and electric golf cart.
With the enthusiasm that merchants bring to enhance the town during the Christmas season, and with the Town of Havana’s special holiday decorations, and now with HMA’s Christmas Card Lane, the town is well on its way to getting known as a place to see what this season is all about! Don’t miss seeing these beautiful cards and sharing them with friends and family on social media. It’s all happening in Havana, Florida!
A special shout out to Jim Kellum, Joy Green and Adriene Forare who labored intensely this past week to bring these creations to fruition, and to each participant who brought individual ideas to their cards! It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas … everywhere you go, in Havana!
