EAST AND WEST PLAY ON, MUNROE DONE:
Three different county football teams enter this week with three different scenarios following last Friday night’s 11th week games.
East Gadsden (4-5) has the best outcome, earning a spot in the 4A playoffs after finishing second in District 1. The Jaguars must shake off their 43-15 regular season ending loss to Rickards and hit the road to face Ft. White, the winner of District 2. Ft. White, located south of Lake City, is 8-1 on the season with their lone loss by four points to Suwanee. Good luck to the Jaguar team! Kickoff is 7:30.
West Gadsden (6-4) has an exciting, less-stressful game planned in Panama City. The Panthers, who finished bowl-eligible, have been invited to play Bay High School (5-5) Wednesday night in the Emerald Coast Bowl. The team is riding high after their 49-34 win over Wewahitchka last week. Beef O’Brady’s is sponsoring the bowl and the team will enjoy a team meal, t-shirts, medals and a share of the gate, courtesy of the tournament. Best of luck, Coach Joey Striplin and the Panther Pride!
Ironically, the team with the county’s best record will be home this week as Munroe’s season concluded with a win over John Paul II on Friday night. The Bobcats spoiled the Panthers’ homecoming and pushed their record to 7-3. Quite a turn-around from last season’s 1-9 record! Munroe and JPII traded touchdowns all night until the Bobcats were able to thwart the Panthers’ two point conversion with 40 seconds remaining and escape with a 34-32 win. Munroe plays football as an Independent and was not eligible for post-season play.
GIRLS GETTING GEARED UP:
The East Gadsden girls’ basketball team will wait until Thursday to open up their season in a big way. The Jaguars will travel to Madison County and play their opening game against a district opponent.
Munroe’s girls’ team, under the direction of new coach Beth Sloan, will jump right in with three games this week. Tuesday the girls open at Liberty County, Thursday they head to Poplar Springs and Friday they host Tallavana Christian.
West Gadsden will have to wait a few weeks to open their season.
BOYS READY TO BOUNCE:
In boys’ basketball openings:
• the West Gadsden Panthers will be hosting a Tip-Off Tournament
• the East Gadsden Jaguars will make two trips to Panama City –Rutherford this week for a Tip-Off Tournament where new head coach Michael Hunt and his team will play Rutherford and Bay.
• And another new coach, Joey Birdsong, will take his Munroe Bobcat basketball team to Poplar Springs on Thursday and Friday where they will play Ponce De Leon and Bonifay.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
