Woe is me! I can’t quite get things going in my football picking this year.
Last week I fell to 2-5 on the season losing to Harold Ziegler as he hit 7-of-10 picks compared to my 6-of-10.
That made the week quite a good one for him as his LSU team beat Florida and he got a win over me.
To even start to get on track is going to be rough as another tough opponent, Randy Greene, Sr., is my competition this week.
Randy was born in Pelham, Georgia. After several family moves he ended up in Quincy where he attended old Gadsden County High School and earned athletic letters in football, basketball and track before graduating in 1948.
That’s when he started working in the grocery business and eventually owned two stores in downtown Quincy before building Randy’s Grocery at what is now the southwest corner of Pat Thomas Parkway and MLK Drive.
That store was opened for business 43 years and was an area landmark.
While in business Randy helped support many of the Recreation Department programs for kids and adults both financially and volunteering as a coach.
He sponsored the Randy’s softball team for years and the Randy’s Rams basketball team was the forerunner of the very successful Quincy Raider A.A.U. team that was known nationwide.
Randy married the former Vicki Williams, who was also originally from South Georgia (Faceville). Vicki’s family had moved to Quincy and Randy first noticed her at First Baptist Church before they became high school sweethearts.
They recently celebrated 63 years of marriage and have fished, ridden motorcycles and worked together all those years making in Randy’s own words, ‘life easier.’
They have two children, daughter Becky who lives at Lake Talquin with her husband Jim Ledger, and Randy Jr., who lives in Quincy with his wife Pam Ellis.
Both Becky and Randy Jr. work for the state and between them they have helped give Randy Sr. and Vicki grandchildren Matt, Jimmy, Vicki, Tracy, Noel and Leona.
Randy, ever community-minded, served on the Gadsden County School Board for 12 years and has been a member of the First Baptist Church for 72 years. His brother Eldon was likewise community-minded and was one of my favorite City Commissioners before his demise.
You’re liable to find Randy Sr. and Vicki at a county athletic event any time as they continue to be very community-minded, and it was at a high school football game where I asked him to be an opponent.
These are his picks for the week…
CLEMSON over FSU - The Seminoles’ schedule has not prepared them for a team like Clemson.
FLORIDA over MISSOURI - I’m a big Gator fan and Mizzo’s quarterback is out.
VIRGINIA over DUKE - Nobody picks Duke.
GEORGIA TECH over SYRACUSE - Tech has played a tougher schedule.
GEORGIA over VANDY - Vandy doesn’t have the team to handle the Dawgs.
TEXAS A&M over AUBURN - A&M and ‘Johnny Football.”
FAMU over HOWARD - I think last week’s win will fire the Rattlers up.
NOTRE DAME over USC - I’ll go with the Irish.
MIAMI over NORTH CAROLINA - I believe the ‘Canes are on their way back.
SOUTH CAROLINA over TENNESSEE - My man Spurrier has his type of quarterbacks.
I need to find my type of something to try to get a win over Randy….
CLEMSON over FLORIDA STATE - I just think there will be too much orange Saturday night.
FLORIDA over MISSOURI - If Florida is to have any kind of season.
DUKE over VIRGINIA - I’ll pick Duke.
GEORGIA TECH over SYRACUSE - Jackets’ offense will roll in this one.
GEORGIA over VANDY - Even banged up the Dawgs are better.
TEXAS A&M over AUBURN - Almost went with the War Eagles.
FAMU over HOWARD - Howard isn’t very good.
NOTRE DAME over USC - Irish are at home.
MIAMI over NORTH CAROLINA - ‘Canes blow away Heels.
SOUTH CAROLINA over TENNESSEE - Spurrier’s bunch looked good last week.
And I hope I look good as I’m putting all the marbles on DUKE as Randy and I differ just ONCE this week.
