Richard H. Schaap, born June 7, 1923, son of Harry and Grace McClure Schaap, in Kent County, Michigan, passed away on August 20, 2013.
Richard was educated in the public schools of Kent County, Michigan. He volunteered for military service from 1941 to 1945 where he served with the United States Army Air Corps, Signal Air Warning Section in the capacity of Supply Sergeant. He graduated from Michigan State University studying surplus lines insurance. Richard was a licensed multi-line insurance claims investigator for over 50 years. He also owned and operated three auto parts stores in the greater Muskegon, Michigan area for several years in the 1960’s.
Richard leaves behind Charlotte Van Landingham Schaap, his wife of 28 years. He is survived by; Steven Schaap (married to Leslie) of Ocala, Florida; James Schaap (married to Carole) of Spring Lake, Michigan; and son-in-law Dan Correll of Tampa, Florida; seven grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Rodger Schaap of Branch, Michigan and Russell Schaap of Blyth, California; as well as many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
His daughter, Jennifer Correll and stepson, Joel Broome preceded him in death.
Richard was retired and had lived in Havana, Florida for the past 28 years where he attended Salem United Methodist Church. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing in Alaska, Florida, Michigan and Wyoming as well as athletic sports and pleasure boating.
Richard always considered himself very blessed in life to have lived to be 90 years of age and to have met and known many great people in his lifetime.
A Memorial Service will be held for Richard at Salem United Methodist Church in Havana on Sunday afternoon, September 15th at 3:00 p.m.
