Monday marked the opening day of high school football for the state.
Locally, two new coaches welcomed their squads with Trace Laing at East Gadsden and Joe Striplin at West Gadsden holding forth as their schools’ head coaches for the first time while Danny Hood entered his second year at Munroe.

Teams will not be allowed in pads for the first few days before the head-knocking starts in earnest.
All three teams will have their first action on Friday, August 23 when Munroe and West Gadsden play in a jamboree at Quincy’s Corry Field and East Gadsden begins its regular season with a game at Bainbridge.

MLB HANDS DOWN
Major League Baseball handed out 13 suspensions Monday afternoon due to the use of performance-enhancement drugs.
The biggest name of the suspensions was Yankees superstar Alex Rodriquez.
The 38-year-old three-time MVP has been canned through 2014 with the suspension starting today (Thursday) pending an appeal.
I saw Rodriquez play while he was in high school in Miami. He is the best high school player I’ve ever seen and he was destined for stardom.
It’s sad that he or any other player resorts to the use of performance enhancement drugs. It just cheapens the game in my opinion.
Can he come back at age 40 and be viable? That of course remains to be seen. Probably the best thing he could do is hang it up for good and put the whole thing to rest as soon as possible.
It’s been quite an off-season for Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel, aka Johnny Football.
Manziel is the first freshman to ever win the award and odds seemed in his favor to become just the second player ever to win it more than once. (Archie Griffin of Ohio State being the only two-time winner.)
The freshman sure didn’t shy away from the limelight during this off-season. In fact, he apparently relished it. Over relished it, you might say, going far enough to embarrass the trophy and his Texas A&M school.
Some of his escapades were out there but the latest revelation, if true, could set the stage for a real mess.
Manziel is rumored to have been paid for signing sports memorabilia, which is a no-no according to amateur rules.
I enjoyed watching Manziel have his season-to-remember last year. Let’s hope he didn’t indeed make it an off-season to forget.
Sunday night’s Hall of Fame football game was played about as expected between the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins. The Cowboys won the thing 24-20 and rookies played much of the game for both teams.
But it was football and put us all a little closer to the regular season for both college and the pros.
This week pro exhibition games will be played Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
