Joan Thompson Mason, 73, of Stone Mountain, Georgia, died Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at Atlanta Medical Center. She was born on October 5, 1939, in Gretna, Florida, to Joseph Harold and Gladys Presnell Thompson.
After graduation from Quincy High School in 1957, she entered the nursing program at Georgia Baptist Hospital where she became a registered nurse. She pursued her career in nursing at Georgia Baptist Hospital, which later became Atlanta Medical Center. She married Dr. Edward M. Mason, who was chief of surgery at Atlanta Medical Center, and together they mentored many young surgical residents and took great pride in the roles they played in the personal and professional lives of Atlanta’s next generation of surgeons.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Edward M. Mason, and her parents.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nicole and Ryan Thrasher of Lilburn, Georgia, and brothers, Alexander (Gale)
Thompson and James Harold (Carolyn) Thompson, both of Quincy, Florida. She was a loving and special aunt to seven nieces and nephews and eight great-nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will gather at the fellowship hall at Gretna Presbyterian Church, 623 Church Street, Gretna, FL, on Saturday, March 16, 2013, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m., to remember Joan and celebrate her life.
