Gadsden Planning & Zoning Commissioners gave conceptual approval to Tallahassee Community College for a building to house students at the Pat Thomas Law Enforcement Academy with a stipulation that an interior connector road would be built. The project proposed a 200-bed, three-story facility on academy property on the north side of U.S. 90 near Midway.

A Florida Asphalt dump truck was struck by a CSX freight train east of Midway throwing the driver, Budd Walker of Tallahassee, from the truck onto the front of the train’s locomotive. Walker was found clinging to the locomotive with head injuries but was alert when transported to the hospital. The dump truck rolled over several times when struck, ejecting Walker and dumping its load of sand on the ground.

Quincy officials held a groundbreaking ceremony at the new industrial park and officially accepted a $184,000 check from the federal government to aid in the development of the park. Officials were there also to welcome Big Bend Rebar, which was relocating to the park and bringing with it 14 new local jobs. “This is a gigantic footstep for the City of Quincy,” Mayor Derrick Elias told those gathered for the ceremony. “I hope I get to attend a thousand more of these.”

With a list of those arrested now exceeding 40 names, agents from the Gadsden County Sheriff’s Dept. Narcotics Unit continued “Operation Crack Attack” with the arrest of six more people, according to a report from the sheriff’s office. Those arrested were the result of undercover drug purchases made by law enforcement, with a majority of those arrested being re-offenders or currently on probation.

Florida Highway patrol Trooper Richard Elliott was recognized as the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year during a joint civic club luncheon in Quincy. Elliott, a 13-year veteran, was chosen for two separate actions in 2012 – apprehending a man with a mobile methamphetamine lab in his car after a lengthy chase that ended in Liberty County, and for arresting four burglars who had broken into a gas station by cutting a hole in the roof.

I can’t wait for it to open.” Thomas had reason to be excited about his new school that was combining both Shanks and Havana Northside into a class 3A high school beginning in 2004. “It is really something special,” said Thomas.

Havana voters returned Charles Leonard to the Town Council Group 3 seat and elected newcomer Olive Collins to the Town Council Group 1 seat in municipal elections. Leonard defeated Willie Chambers 59% to 41% while Collins bested fellow newcomer Gerald McGill 63% to 37%.

Over 800 people enjoyed the food and camaraderie during the Havana Library fish fry at the Havana Community Park. According to the Havana Kiwanis Club, which sponsored the event along with the Havana Volunteer Fire Department, approximately $5,000 was netted for use by the new library, which was under construction at the west end of the park.

Starting Friday with a scholarship banquet, to Saturday’s parade, to service on Sunday, thousands of people turned out in Quincy to welcome home the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in Super Bowl XXXVII, Quincy’s own Dexter Jackson. The event was planned and carried out by a host of volunteers from throughout the county. [Full Story »]

Guest speaker for the event was TCC president Dr. William Law, who spoke about TCC’s involvement in economic development, particularly as it pertained to Gadsden County. Chamber members and guests got to tour the new facility, socialize on the back deck and network with other business leaders.

Yellow ribbons were tied around trees lining Havana’s median Saturday afternoon, March 29, by a group of citizens who wanted to show support for American troops in Iraq. The group consisted of Shirley McGill, Edna Hall, Mary Washington and Ira Dean Herring. “We wanted to show our support for our troops,” said McGill, who had family members and several friends in Iraq. “I encourage all citizens to display the yellow bows and ribbons.”

Chattahoochee High School would remain open until a new western Gadsden high school was built. The decision came after many months of haggling and debate by the school board over whether money could be saved by closing the under-utilized school, and what classes, if any, should be moved to Greensboro High School in the interim before a new school was built.

Over $50,000 was raised by the Havana Relay for Life event held at the Havana Community Park. “Havana’s reputation is that we have the ability to organize for a good cause,” said co-chairman Molly Wilson, “and everyone from every walk of life supported this good cause.” Wilson said $50,062.48 had been collected and “there will be additional monies coming in.”

It took a week-long trial for the jury to determine that Reginald Holmes was guilty of three counts of first degree murder and one count of attempted first degree murder. Holmes had shot three women and one man, execution-style, near Havana on River Road, allegedly over stolen drug money. The three women died, the man managed to survive. Holmes was sentenced to four life sentences without parole.
