Sheriff Morris A. Young issued a statement Thursday afternoon regarding Kaldrick Donald, who was killed by a police officer last week in Gretna:
“Any loss of life, particularly a young life, is extremely unfortunate. Our condolences go out to the Donald family. We would encourage prayers and support for the family of Officer Brown; as certainly both families are impacted greatly by this unfortunate occurrence. As a father, I can't imagine the difficulty of this situation. As the Sheriff of Gadsden County, I intend to get answers so that justice can be served.
“I understand that there are planned demonstrations for today and perhaps there will be additional ones in the near future. I not only welcome, but also support the right of expression by way of peaceful demonstrations. On our end, we will continue to protect and serve our community by ensuring public safety. I would ask and encourage demonstrators to promote peaceful expressions of support for Kaldrick Donald and his family. (There is a planned demonstration in Gretna Thursday evening)
Gretna Police Department – A team of assessors from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement
Accreditation (CFA) will arrive on December 2, 2014 to examine all aspects of Gretna Police Department policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services. The Gretna Police Department has to comply with approximately 260 standards in order to receive accreditation.
As part of the on-site assessment, agency members and the general public are invited to offer written comments about the Gretna Police Department’s ability to meet the standards of accreditation. The assessment team, which is composed of law enforcement practitioners from similar agencies, will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit units and other areas of the agency to determine compliance. The CFA Assessment Team Leader is Lieutenant Michelle Price, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Assisting Lt. Price will be Accreditation Manager Kim Wilson, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and Lieutenant Wayne Enterkin, Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office.
Once the Commission’s assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full commission, which will then decide if the agency is to receive accredited status. The Gretna Police Department accreditation term is three years. Verification by the team that the Gretna Police Department meets the Commission’s standards is part of a voluntary process to obtain the initial accreditation.
