The City of Quincy’s Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) board met in a special meeting on Tuesday, September 24th to discuss details of the contract of its resigning director, Charles Hayes. Hayes gave the board members a letter of resignation on September 9th as a beginning point of his 30-day notice of termination of his contract. In it, he requested that the period be 45 days instead, to help give the board time to hunt for someone to succeed him. The board denied the 45 days and an additional request for payment of annual and sick leave.
Not since 1877, when the newly elected Governor George F. Drew determined that public education was an unnecessary expense and stopped funding the public schools, has Florida had a governor with less real interest in education. [Full Story »]

The Havana Kiwanis Club honored three Havana residents for their service as volunteers in many areas that benefitted the Havana community. Taking the prize for the club’s first annual Volunteer of the Year was Nell Cunningham. Her motto was, “Your community should be a better place because you once lived there.” Other honored volunteers were Vernell “Coach” Ross and Lillian Johnson. [Full Story »]
