Midway city council members gave unanimous approval last Thursday evening to the city’s interim police chief, Jerome Turner, to have the title as a permanent position. Turner has been serving since March as interim through September 30th. His new title and salary of $43,500 date to October 1st, 2013, said Interim City Manager Dot Inman-Johnson, who had recommended him for the full-time position.

I woke up last Friday morning thinking, ‘If I see one more orange pumpkin, scarecrow, harvest scene, bat or anything else that screams, Fall! or Halloween!, I’m gonna scream myself!’ Therein lies the problem with the retail world. My husband and I own an antiques shop and we get into the swing of things by retail seasons, not those calendar-mandated. Somehow, Thanksgiving sort of gets lost in the shuffle from the Fall events to the Christmas shopping season. The Thanksgiving holiday is one of the few days most Havana merchants are closed for the day, and it therefore becomes very much a family- and friend-oriented day for us. [Full Story »]

About 150 people attended the Veterans Day ceremony at the Havana Community Park. Guest speaker Col. Ernest Moore (US Army, Ret.) said Havana service men and women had never faltered. “They answered the call,” he said. “They put their lives on the line.” The East Gadsden JROTC unit presented the colors as the crowd recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang patriotic songs. Lucy Mae Rudd, 87, passed away Monday, November 11, 2013. The service will be Thursday, November 14, 11:00 AM, Grace Baptist Church. The visitation will be Wednesday, November 13, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Independent Funeral Home (850-875-1529).
Ms. Lucy was a lifelong resident of Quincy; she retired with 27 years at Higdon Grocery Co. Her loves were family, flowers, and gardening.
Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Hayes (Wayne); sons, Larry James Rudd (Kathy), Jerry Rudd (Alicia), Hershel Rudd (Ouida), Lynette Spooner (James Earl); grandchildren, Tim Hayes, Lynn McDaniel, Debra Sellers, Lori Leis, Jocelyn Hickey, Kourtney Rudd, Mindy Rudd, Mandy Rudd, Amy Anderson, Jason Rudd, Kevin Rudd, James Jr. (Bubba) Spooner, Shannon Spooner, Cathy Spooner, Krista Jones, Keith Brown; 26 great grandchildren, Sarah, Hunter, Landon, Gabby, Morgan, Garrett, Hunter, Lanie, Ally, Molly, Kyla, Tyler, Graysen, Madison, Gavin, Brooke, Parker, Justin, Garrett, Leigh, Jesse, Erin, Hannah, Luke, Masen, and Mason.
She is preceded in death by; a husband, Virgil James Rudd; and a daughter, Linda Nell Rudd.
