I am writing this letter to our Havana community on behalf of the Havana Garden Club to ask your help in taking care of our Town Park in front of the Havana Library.
The Havana Garden Club has planted trees and created a butterfly garden including a fountain and trellis. In addition, the gazebo was recently landscaped with plants and pine straw. It is scheduled for new paint very soon. However, we need your help with some problems if the Town Park improvements are to survive:
Limbs on the newly planted trees have been broken off; On several occasions, people have turned off the irrigation system at the fountain or have left the water running at the spigot which flooded the beds;
People have broken a pipe on the fountain and strewn the rocks from the base of the fountain plants; and, Trash and cigarette butts have been dropped on the pine straw at the gazebo which creates a risk for a fire.
We know everyone enjoys the Town Park and this damage is being done by just a few. We have talked to the Havana Police who have promised to respond if anyone reports vandalism at the park. So, we are asking neighbors and park users to report any destructive behavior to the police so hopefully they can interrupt and stop the bad behavior before anything gets further damaged.
We plan to continue our efforts to improve the Town Park for use and enjoyment by everyone. This is one of the nice features of our town and library area. However – for now – we must protect the progress being made.
