Robert D. “R.D.”
Chief Robert D. "R.D." Edwards, 90, of Quincy, passed away on December 28, 2016. He is survived by the love of his life (68 years), Ethel Edwards.
R.D. was born in Greensboro and spent his entire life in Gadsden County. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, 41st Infantry Division and served during World War II and the Liberation of the Philippines. He was a member and deacon of Santa Clara Baptist Church in Quincy. He was also a member of the Gideons International.
R.D. served the Quincy Public Safety Department for 30 years and retired as Public Safety Director. He also worked part-time as an Assistant Counselor for the Juvenile Court for 25 years under the Honorable Guy A. Race. He was an honorable man who served God, Family, Country, and Community. One of his greatest joys was fishing with his brother and grandchildren.
Other survivors include his children, Gail Edwards Ricks of Quincy, Larry Edwards (Michele) of Quincy, Joey Edwards (Katy) of Mt. Pleasant, and Craig Edwards (Bridget) of Lynn Haven; daugther-in-law, Cathy Edwards of Greensboro; sister, Marguerite Miller of Greensboro; brothers, Ollie B. Edwards (Erika) of Tallahassee, and Charles Edwards (Yvonne) of Greensboro; 12 grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Ronnie Edwards; one granddaughter, Sarah Edwards; and one sister, Lucille Lovett.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 31st at Santa Clara Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior at the church. The committal will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery in Quincy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideons International or the Honor Flight of Tallahassee.
