Tomorrow (Friday, November 11th) is Veterans Day, a day to pause and honor America's veterans, both living and deceased.
Those who are serving and who have served in the past basically gave this country a blank check by taking an oath to serve our country, in whose service they commit to, up to and including giving their lives for the United States of America.
I come from a long line of men (and one woman) who reported to duty. My husband, Rick, grandfathers, father, uncles and one great-aunt served their country. My great-aunt Helen, the last redhead in the family until me, was unique and quite feisty. She drove General Dwight D. Eisenhower in the European Theater. Maybe that's where she picked up the spicy lingo. Loved that woman. Many other long-since gone men were soldiers, all the way back to the Civil War and before. I remember my grandmother talking about men serving in the War of Revolution.
Please visit Havana's Community Park on 6th Avenue East at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 11th to give presence at the town's annual Veterans Day program. It is always different each year and having so many members of our community attend gives special recognition to the meaning of the day, honoring those who served.
On another note:
The Havana Kiwanis Club was given a $500.00 check Tuesday from the Havana Merchants Association (HMA) to help fund the special programs that the club produces each year. Kiwanians worldwide make children's needs their special focus. We offer college scholarships, assist with kid's athletics programs, buy school uniforms and classroom needs, honor a Havana person in the Fall at our Vernell Ross Volunteer of the Year banquet, and host a Pre-K lunch during the Christmas holiday season. We have many other programs throughout the year as well.
The members of HMA also bring special events to town. We recently took part in HMA's Wine Around the Block social. Havana Kiwanians helped sell tickets to the fun event, which was sold out. HMA's John Langan and Ingra Battles, who own Miss T's Sets in Havana, brought a big $500.00 check to our weekly meeting as a thank-you for Kiwanis' assistance with the WAB. Havana Kiwanis is grateful for the check which will enhance our ability to help our area's children!
