Midway Police Chief Jerome Turner held up his department’s third-place trophy from the Florida Department of Transportation’s recent law enforcement challenge at Midway’s council meeting Thursday night, May 10.
“This is one of the safest cities around – we have a great traffic team. As third-place winner (in our category), we received $10,000 and credits to purchase traffic safety equipment,” said Turner, who said MWPD had competed with 17 other departments around the state. “This will make a significant impact in traffic safety,” said Turner.
Turner also said he and his department are shifting their focus to community policing and crime prevention. “A lot of elderly people don’t have house numbers on their homes. We wrote a grant and received $750 from the WalMart Foundation’s local facilities program. This is an additional effort in working with the community by doing more with less,” said Turner, who said the Midway police officers want to give citizens the level of protection they deserve.
“This will help emergency management get quicker access in emergencies.”
City manager Dot Inman-Johnson advised the board that Midway had submitted a grant request to the Florida legislature last session. The city was awarded $75,000, which will be utilized for planning the city’s proposed sewer project. She said she had talked with the Northwest Florida Water Management District about getting help with funding and was told they would work with her to meet with legislators about getting the project funded. They said they had analyzed standing water in the city and have proof of pollution. People with septic tanks not operating properly should let her know.
Former city council member Claudette Cromartie appeared before the board to ask the city’s consideration of creating a Founders Day event, to celebrate the men and women, living and deceased, who were the original founders of Midway. The city will honor them at Midway Day on August 30th, purchase an archival display case for city hall, and seek an all-day event for next year.
