SPRING FOOTBALL FLING:
The West Gadsden Panther football team will be participating in their spring game this week when they head to Maclay along with FAMU in a three-team jamboree on Friday beginning at 6 p.m. Coach Joe Striplin is sitting on ready and excited to finally play.
East Gadsden and new, excited and optimistic head coach Antonio Carter will face the Godby Giants, I mean Cougars, on Friday night. Kickoff at 7:00 at Gene Cox Stadium.
Munroe stayed up late with baseball and a wise and tenured new head coach, Vic Culley, set up a coach-directed, controlled scrimmage with John Paul II Catholic High School on Saturday at JP II. Coach Culley said after the scrimmage, “Parent support was amazing and everyone got to participate. Team morale is high and we plan to work hard this summer.”
SUNSHINE STATE GAMES OPEN:
Back in the mid-’90s I coached a girls’ AAU basketball team for several years. We were quite successful and won a state championship. One of our favorite experiences was participating in the Sunshine State Games. The games have expanded and morphed since then but they opened May 9 with basketball and end December 13 with Powerlifting and Road Racing. In between there is Artistic Rollerskating, Lacrosse, Swimming, Track and Field, Water Polo, Badmitton, Grass Volleyball and numerous other sports such as Disc golf, Racquetball and Ultimate Frisbee.
