Last Friday morning many Havana Middle School bus students got an opportunity to walk the last mile to school.
They were part of the Walk or Bike to School initiative organized by the Partnership for a Walkable America and the Gadsden County School District.
Denise Pouncy Hannah, the coordinator for the initiative for the district, said this was a great opportunity to get students outside and exercising.
This program started in 1997 in Chicago IL, as part of a National Walk Our Children To School Day.
Hannah said there were a lot of reasons for the event that include: Walking and bicycling brings a sense of joy and independence, it helps create healthier habits, and it replaces car trips which helps reduce congestion and air pollution.
Another benefit, she noted, is that it helps promote safety by encouraging the building of sidewalks and adding traffic calming measures around neighborhoods and schools.
