Gadsden County’s Kendal Weeks got credit for a 7-3 FAMU win over Navy Sunday helping the Rattlers get off to a good start to the beginning of the season.
Weeks threw four shutout innings and had four strikeouts in his outing. The win lifted FAMU to a 2-1 weekend. They also defeated Navy 3-2 in a Sunday game after losing to the Middies 2-0 in Saturday’s season opener.
Weeks had a hit in that game and Cameron Simms, another Munroe graduate, pitched 2/3 of an inning of hitless baseball.
The weekend series began Chattahoochee’s Jamie Shouppe’s career as the FAMU head coach.
Florida State and Florida also opened their seasons with home games.
The Tribe swept Niagara 13-2, 4-1, and 13-0.
FSU pitching looks strong again with Luke Weaver, Brandon Leibrandt and Mike Compton getting wins. DJ Stewart had four hits in the 13-2 game, which was the Seminoles’ 16th straight opening game win. John Nogowski had three hits in the 4-1 win and Justin Gonzalez had three hits and
Gage West hit a home run in the 13-0 win.
Florida won 2 of 3 against Maryland.
The Gators won 4-0 Friday with Bobby Payner picking up the win. On Saturday Maryland clipped Florida 9-7 before the Gators came back to win 8-5 Sunday behind a 3-RBI game from Taylor Gushue.
FAMU played at Mercer Tuesday and Wednesday. The Rattlers will host Jackson State in a Saturday double-header before playing Jackson State at home again Sunday.
On Tuesday Troy will come to Tallahassee before FAMU plays at Jacksonville Wednesday.
The FSU schedule for the week finds Georgia coming to Howser for Friday, Saturday and Sunday games. The Seminoles go to Tampa Tuesday for an exhibition game against the Yankees.
Florida hosted UCF Tuesday and North Florida Wednesday. They will play at Miami Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
