This past December, Hunters Helping Hunters Inc. in Mt. Pleasant held their annual Zack Memorial Wounded Warrior Hunt.
Mike and Laura Layerd, the founders of Hunters Helping Hunters, have spearheaded the hunt, which is celebrating its 10th year.
This year 10 Wounded Warriors were paired with volunteers who assist them during the hunt.
Over the course of the weekend hunters were able to bag two deer, and this year Mike got to cut the shirt tails of three of the hunters who missed their shots.
This is a family affair for the Layerds, including daughter Robin and son-in-law Shannon Lingo, and their three sons.
Not only are the Layerds able to help these Wounded Warriors, but the hunt helps keep alive the name of their grandson, Zack, who died in a car crash four years ago.
“This is a great opportunity to give back to the wounded warriors and their families for the sacrifices they have given our country,” the Layerds said of the hunt.
Tallahassee Bass Pro Shop manager Jeff Shaw provided gift bags to all of the hunters this year and helped with the hunt.

Mike said that the local donations provided through Hunters Helping Hunters went solely to put on the hunt. The hunters were fed four meals while on the hunt, all of which were donated through Helping Hand and local donations.
He wanted to thank all of the folks who helped make this year’s hunt another success.
