Due to an omission Dayton Jones and I ended last week’s football picking contest in a tie.
Dayton had a 7-3 mark while I was 7-2. Inadvertently I left out the Texas-TCU game in my picks. In this column I’m the one that makes the rules and my ruling is I have to count it as a loss thus making us both 7-3.
That leaves my season mark at 3-5-1 as I head into my Georgia-Florida-week column.
The game of course doesn’t have much meaning this time around. Nothing like the FSU-Miami rumble. But it’s still a bragging rights game and lately the Gators haven’t had much to brag about.
My opponent this week is a big Georgia fan who grew up in Bulldog country.
Randall Weatherford is an agent with the Lumpkin County Farm Bureau of Georgia, a firm he’s been with for 19 years.
He’s an original Dahlonega lad who ran track while at Dahlonega High. After graduating Dahlonega, Randall attended North Fulton College.
His wife Kim is a Georgia lass from DeKalb County. Kim teaches in the Hall County system in Gainesville.
I met Randall at Tootsie’s in Panama City Beach where he was gathered with some of his colleagues who had won a Farm Bureau state contest for a Sportsman Holiday.
Like Randall, most of them were big Georgia Bulldogs and I could not believe I found myself amongst such a crowd.
But it worked out just fine as they were all great people to be around. In conversation I told Randall I was going to ask him to pick against me Georgia-Florida week. He said he would be glad to.
So here it is, and here are his picks…
GEORGIA over FLORIDA - Both teams are beat up but the Dawgs should have the edge.
FSU over MIAMI - Seminoles are pretty awesome.
NORTH CAROLINA over N.C. STATE - Just a hunch.
WAKE FOREST over SYRACUSE - Deacs played a good game last week.
GEORGIA TECH over PITTSBURGH - I’ll go with the Georgia team.
MISSOURI over TENNESSEE - Have to pick Mizzou.
SOUTH CAROLINA over MISSISSIPPI STATE - Gamecocks have a good team.
AUBURN over ARKANSAS - Tigers are on a roll.
NORFOLK STATE over FAMU - A home game for Norfolk.
MICHIGAN STATE over MICHIGAN - On a guess.
And here’s how I’ll try to outguess Randall….
FLORIDA over GEORGIA - I’m the type that would buy tidal wave insurance in Arizona.
FSU over MIAMI - ‘Noles’ storm insurance is paid up.
N.C. STATE over NORTH CAROLINA - ‘Packs’ property insurance has been issued.
SYRACUSE over WAKE FOREST - Orange have home insurance.
GEORGIA TECH over PITTSBURGH - Pitt can’t find an anti-sting policy.
MISSOURI over TENNESSEE - Mizzou put a comeback clause in their policy this week.
SOUTH CAROLINA over MISSISSIPPI STATE - State having trouble with health insurance.
AUBURN over ARKANSAS - Hawgs home invasion policy has lapsed.
NORFOLK STATE over FAMU - Rattlers travel insurance void.
MICHIGAN STATE over MICHIGAN - Spartans have better auto insurance plan.
And I really don’t know what kind of plan I’ve come up with to try to top Randall in our three differences.
