One last thought on the government shutdown: It doesn’t make much sense to shut down government and then pay all federal employees for the time they were furloughed.
If they are going to get paid, why not have them on the job? I guarantee all the lights and air conditioners are still on. This silly exercise in futility amounts to a Fall vacation with pay for them and a royal shafting for the rest of us. America needs to wise up and elect some better leaders. What we have now are a bunch of lawyers who never held a real job. We need candidates whose campaigns include the word ‘compromise.’ Something to this effect: “I promise to honestly and sincerely compromise with my fellow senators and representatives across the aisle to make decisions that are in the best interest of the American people.”
We have the power, folks. We cast the ballots.
Now, let’s switch gears.
There’s a new book out that claims America was discovered not by Christopher Columbus but by a Chinese explorer 70 years earlier. A story last week about the book said this is based on a detailed map of America dating back to 1418 that was found in a bookstore. The map is attributed to Admiral Zheng He, one of China’s greatest explorers.
The author of “Who Discovered America?,” Gavin Menzies, says Columbus used Admiral He’s map to plot his own voyage and that attributing the discovery of America to Columbus is a fairy tale.
According to the story, Menzies is considered a “pseudo-historian” by critics, who say his claims are not based in historical fact.
However, he stands by his research.
The map has been authenticated by Christie’s but the actual year it was created can’t be exactly proven. Menzies argues certain landmarks on the map coincide with that time period.
I personally don’t want to believe it. I was taught in first grade that Christopher Columbus “in 1942 sailed the ocean blue” in the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. And you know, Menzies is right, the story of Columbus’ voyage is an American fairy tale – a story we never tire of. I’d like for it to stay that way. Besides, there are too many things in America named for Columbus, including a holiday, and we don’t need to go mess’n around with that! Zheng He, Ohio just doesn’t have a good ring to it.
In reality, no one discovered America. Native Indians already lived here! Columbus was the first European who visited America.
Maybe there was a guy from China who did too.
Fact is, regardless of who discovered America, it became and still is the greatest country in the world ... in spite of ourselves.
