Havana Kiwanis Club members are a true measure of giving service to our community. We have so many members who not only devote time, energy and money to our Kiwanis projects but also those same members help others through their volunteering at other Havana events, even helping spouses’ organizations as well.
We’re a growing membership in a day and age of other clubs losing members. We give out a number of college scholarships that are paid for through our Kiwanis projects: a golf tourney, Christmas fruit sales, a community barbecue dinner, and the like. We feed over a hundred people for Christmas dinner, paid for by Kiwanis members boiling peanuts for sales at a booth at PumpkinFest and other programs. We buy an Ipad to raffle off from PumpkinFest through Havana Holiday Festival and Snow Village in December, when a winner is selected.
We help support the East Gadsden High School (EGHS) Key Club, an initiative of Kiwanians everywhere. The Key Club coordinator Pamela Mills, and Angela Sapp, the previous coordinator, work closely with Havana Kiwanis through volunteering for various projects, and their service is extraordinary and outstanding. They are always polite and do exactly what they’re asked to do without complaint … indeed, they enjoy their service!
Most members attend the annual county service organizations’ Law Enforcement Luncheon and Awards banquet. We have four law-enforcement officers who are now Kiwanians: Retired police chief Glynn Beach, current police chief Tracy Smith, new lieutenant Ridgeway Stone and our newest member officer Kenny Lewis. We’re very proud of their extraordinary participation and service to our community.
Our membership covers a wide variety of professionals: From those in government, retirees, veterinarian, bankers, the law enforcement officials mentioned, school principal, pastors, construction company owner, CPA, appraiser, representatives from other organizations, an antiques shop owner, reporter and more.
I am proud of our organization and proud to be a member of the Havana Kiwanis Club since 1996.
