The government shutdown. Who’s it hurting? Certainly not our legislators who continue to get paid regardless of whether the government is operating or not.
Nor our president. They’re all having fun playing a silly game of politics.
Fortunately the military continues to get paid. I’d hate to see a major shutdown there. But many other non-essential federal employees are being furloughed. Approximately 800,000 to be exact. They are home, without pay, waiting for the Democrats and Republicans to settle their differences.
Both parties are at fault and it aggravates me. The Republican House members have caused this with their unyielding stand against Obamacare while the Democratic administration is making it as painful as possible to the American people. Both parties are trying to make a point. And guess what? ... us little guys who make up the country are the ones who get to suffer. Although a shutdown may not affect us as directly in these parts, it’s causing hardships for a lot of people.
I hate to tell the Republicans but Obamacare is law, bolstered by a Supreme Court ruling, and until they have complete control of the government, this nation is going to have to live with it. And I hate to tell the Democrats, but a lot of people oppose the plan and the uncertainty of how it will affect them and their pocketbooks. Why not compromise and make national healthcare something we can all accept? Obamacare is a work in progress and needs both parties’ participation. Believe or not, Republicans also have ideas of what constitutes a national health care plan.
Now, might I suggest, if government is going to provide us with half our usual services, why don’t we pay half our usual income taxes. If the government stops functioning (many say it has never functioned correctly) then it doesn’t need funding. Right? It’s not spending money.
But we have huge debts to pay, both old and new. And all these furloughed employees will probably get something for their time off anyway. They’re just getting an early fall vacation. So the income tax ‘furlough’ idea is out of the window.
The real catastrophy will occur when the US Government defaults on what it owes. That’s when the you-know-what hits the fan. If we can’t borrow money and timely pay our debts we’ll end up like much of Europe. Broke.
Something needs to give. It usually does after two or three weeks. Otherwise this great country of ours will become a has-been. And the Chinese and Saudi Arabians, and maybe even the Russians, will own us.
