There is one thing for sure, I will not go undefeated this year. Blountstown resident Phillip Griffin saw to that last week when he hit 8-of-10 picks to best my 7-of-10, leaving me with a 0-1 start.
It’s going to be hard to avoid an 0-2 start with this week’s opponent being a big, big, football man.
So big, that he started on the Detroit Lions defensive line for nine years.
Curtis Green was always big. The Quincy-born and raised man was a star on the Quincy Shanks football teams in the late ‘70s and went on to stand out at Alabama State in Montgomery before being drafted by Detroit.
After his very successful pro career Curtis came back to Montgomery and has been the Director of the Smilie Recreation Center in the Alabama city since his retirement.
Besides being very busy at the Recreation Center, Curtis is busy at keeping up with his five children.
One son, Curtis, Jr., lives in Jacksonville. Another, Carlos, lives in Montgomery, and a third, Chris, lives in Quincy and works for Gadsden County.
Daughters Chantel and Charmta attend college. Chantel goes to Faulkner in Montgomery and Charmta is at Troy.
I got to see Curtis for the first time in a long time this summer at Robert Bradwell’s birthday party.
It was good to see him and we scheduled him being an opponent of mine. With his background you know he’ll be a tough opponent, as we’ll see with these picks…
MIAMI over FLORIDA - Miami has more experienced players and ‘Canes are at home.
SOUTH CAROLINA over GEORGIA - Gamecocks have the most energy left after last week.
BOSTON COLLEGE over WAKE FOREST - Eagles are at home.
OREGON over VIRGINIA - Ducks have a high-powered offense and a great defense.
FAMU over TENNESSEE STATE - New head coach wins his first home game.
NORTHWESTERN over SYRACUSE - Wildcats have a pretty good program going.
MICHIGAN over NOTRE DAME - Irish are without their quarterback.
DUKE over MEMPHIS - Devils have a game under their belt.
ALABAMA STATE over JACKSON STATE - Hornets have a good team
DETROIT LIONS over MINNESOTA VIKINGS - The Lions will be stronger in the second half of games this year.
And I need to be stronger than last week with these picks…..
FLORIDA over MIAMI - The Gators defense will have to win it.
SOUTH CAROLINA over GEORGIA - The Dawgs are beat up after last week’s loss to Clemson.
BOSTON COLLEGE over WAKE FOREST - A Friday night game that could be fun to watch.
OREGON over VIRGINIA - Ducks could have more yardage than miles traveled to get to the game.
FAMU over TENNESSEE STATE - Holmes keeps Rattlers heading in the right way.
NORTHWESTERN over SYRACUSE - Wildcats have some pretty sharp claws.
MICHIGAN over NOTRE DAME - Wolverines will growl at home.
DUKE over MEMPHIS - In a toss up.
ALABAMA over JACKSON STATE - Because Curtis said so.
DETROIT LIONS over MINNESOTA VIKINGS - Because he believes so.
Which leaves us with only ONE difference, Curtis. Go Gators!
