The Havana Police Department would like to remind everyone that safe storage of your firearm is your responsibility. A lock is not a substitute for safe and secure storage. Whether at home, in the field, at the range, or anywhere, the first concern of every firearm owner should be safety.
Chief Tracy Smith would like to remind everyone of the four basic safety rules:
1. Treat ALL firearms as if they were loaded.
2. DO NOT point at or cover anything with the muzzle until ready to shoot.
3. Keep your trigger finger off the trigger and outside the trigger guard until ready to shoot.
4. Be certain of your target and your line of fire.
Safe and secure storage of your firearm is one of your most important responsibilities. It is a full-time responsibility. You must always secure your firearm and ammunition so that they are not accessible to children or other unauthorized persons.
In an effort to ensure safe storage of all firearms, the Havana Police Department will be giving away gun locks during the month of August. Chief Smith says that the safety of our children should be top priority, and by making all firearms safe we can prevent accidental discharges.
If you live in the Town of Havana and transportation is a problem, just call the department at 850-539-2800 and an officer will bring the locks to you.
