Julian Frederick Harper, 82, of Havana, Florida, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2013. Julian was born August 31, 1930 and reared in Quincy, FL.
He was a first generation American. His Dad came to America in 1907 at the age of 15 from London, England. Julian graduated from Gadsden County High School in Quincy in 1948 where he played football and basketball. He graduated from Bowling Green Business University, Bowling Green, Kentucky in 1956 and then attended the Graduate School of Business at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana.
His education was interrupted by the Korean War. After four years in the Navy he was able to complete his education with the help of the G. I. Bill. He returned to Quincy where he worked for a brief time at Quincy State Bank. Shortly after returning to Quincy he was contacted by the United States Gypsum Company in response to a job application he had submitted some months earlier. Julian was subsequently hired by the United States Gypsum Company.
After training in Jacksonville, Florida and the home office in Chicago, Illinois he was assigned to the Jacksonville, Florida sales district as a Sales Representative with headquarters in Daytona Beach, Florida.
After six years with the Gypsum Company he was hired by Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Smith, Inc. in Jacksonville, Florida. After 32 years with Merrill Lynch, he retired as Assistant Vice President and Senior Financial Consultant in the Jacksonville office. While in Jacksonville he was very active in Southside Presbyterian Church where he was a deacon and subsequently was elected an Elder.
Julian was predeceased by; his parents, Anna Belle Collins Harper (March 1934) and John F. Harper (July 1954); his younger brother, Harry Eugene Harper (October 1934); a very special aunt, Katie Collins Owens (February 1995) and his wonderful wife, Mary Sue (Susie) Wells Harper (February, 2013).
Julian is survived by; two children from a previous marriage, Colleen Harper Collins (Joe) of Blairsville, Georgia and Alan J. Harper of New Orleans, Louisiana; and twin grandchildren, Alexander J. Collins and Emma Grace Collins of Blairsville, Georgia.
Service was held Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church in Havana, FL. Family received friends from 10:00 – 11:00 AM at the church. Interment was at Hillcrest Cemetery in Quincy, FL.
