This Saturday, my parents will celebrate their 67th anniversary. That’s one for the near-record book.
In this day and age, when families are becoming blended with more than one set of parents, it’s an amazing feat! Mom and Dad married young and brought me up with a strong sense of family and instilled in me knowledge of their abiding love for each other. Happy anniversary to Nikki and Dick Beare!
Father’s Day is Sunday, June 16th. Soon after Mother’s Day was inaugurated in the early 1900s, a woman named Sonora Dodd pushed to recognize fathers as well. Sonora Smart Dodd began her advocacy for the holiday at the Spokane, Washington YMCA on June 19th, 1910, where she was living with her father, who as a single parent was raising six children. President Lyndon Baines Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation in 1966 honoring fathers, and six years later President Richard M. Nixon made it a permanent holiday by signing it into law in 1972. I am fortunate to have parents who love me and raised me well. On this Father’s Day, I say Happy Father’s Day, Dad!
THOSE WHO SERVE
Working as a photo-journalist for The Herald, I have many opportunities to perform my work alongside law enforcement officials, firefighters and emergency responders. We have outstanding examples of ‘the best of the best’ in Gadsden County, and certainly a terrible vehicle crash this past weekend was a standout. Firefighters used the ‘jaws of life’ to help them get a driver out of the vehicle as others stood by ready to put out any fire if needed. EMS members worked feverishly to stabilize the situation. Law enforcement officials from the Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol kept traffic moving. Lifefight stood by if needed. The professionalism and caring exhibited in this and every other situation I’ve been at has always been above and beyond the call of duty. I want to publicly give them all a shout-out for their service to our community, our county. THANK YOU ALL!
