James J. Johnson, age 78, died Wednesday, May 15, 2013 after a brief illness.
He is survived by; his daughter, Stephanie Carruthers (Mark); brother, William Eugene “Gene” Johnson (Janice); one aunt, Dorothy Johnson (Kenneth); one niece, Janice Johnson Wonsch (Bruce); and numerous cousins.
He was predeceased by; his parents, Thomas and Maggie Johnson and his wife, Hilda Brogden Johnson.
He was better known as “JJ”. There will never be another like him. He was a character and known throughout the county as the “go to or answer” guy if you needed a part for a car, tractor or farm equipment. He could be found every morning having a biscuit and sausage at Hardee’s with the other retirees that hung out in the west side corner there. He built a small truck known as “Deputy Dog” and drove it in a few parades. He was also known for his Christmas Light extravagance for many years outside Gretna on Hwy 90. Before he got physically unable he enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was an honorary Deputy for the Gadsden County Sheriff Office (GCSO).
Graveside services were held Saturday, May 18, 2013, 10:30 AM at the old Mt. Pleasant Cemetery on Hwy 90. Family received visitors at the cemetery thirty minutes prior to the service.
Charles McClellan Funeral Home, Quincy, FL was in charge of the arrangements.
