Mrs. Virginia Gregory Duncan, age 87, presently of Fernandina Beach, FL passed away on Tuesday evening, April 9, 2013 at Quality Health Care of Fernandina Beach.
Born in Havana, FL, she was one of three children born to the late Raymond Robert and Ida Virginia Murrell Gregory and the last living.
She was a graduate of Havana High School, attended Florida State College for Women in Tallahassee and completed her Bachelor Degree in Nursing at Duke University. She worked as a Registered Nurse for the Public Health Department in Tavares before taking many years off to raise four boys. She later worked in Geriatric Care in Lake County. Following this, she worked in Real Estate before retiring. She and her husband Joe then split their time between Franklin, NC and Tavares. They returned to Tavares briefly before moving to Jacksonville and then Fernandina to be near family in her final years.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph D. Duncan, Sr.; her sister, Alice Woods; and her brother, Raymond Gregory, Jr.
Mrs. Duncan leaves behind, her sons, J. Douglas Duncan, Jr. (Patti), Fernandina Beach, FL, Gregory F. Duncan (Sue), Durham, NC, Scott Stuart Duncan, Grand Isle, FL, Bruce G. Duncan (Stephanie), Sorrento, FL, seven grandchildren, Joseph D. Duncan, III, Austin, TX, M. Kristine Duncan Wortham (Louis), Fernandina Beach, FL, Beth Duncan Osterhaven (Matt), Ada, MI, Matthew Duncan, Durham, NC, Katie Duncan, Durham, NC, Scotty Duncan, Grand Isle, FL, Sean Duncan, Orlando, FL, three great grandchildren, Cameron, Lauren, Connor and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 13, 2013 in the Chapel of Steverson - Hamlin & Hilbish Funeral Home of Tavares with her son, Gregory F. Duncan, officiating.
She was laid to rest beside her husband in Tavares City Cemetery.
Her family received friends on Friday from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at Steverson – Hamlin & Hilbish Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer’s or Hospice Association of your choice.
