Harvey’s Supermarket in Havana was honored Friday morning by Second Harvest of the Big Bend for its food donations to Community Cares Outreach in Havana.
The award was presented to Harvey’s manager Cindy Miller by Stephanie Kilham, Director of Food Resources for Second Harvest. “This is a token of our appreciation,” Kilham told Miller.
Kilham said the Havana Harvey’s has contributed almost 10,000 meals since May that have been distributed by Community Cares in the Havana community.
There are five Harvey’s Supermarkets in Second Harvest’s 11-county service area that have contributed over 30,000 meals, Kilham said. The Havana store accounts for almost a third of that total.
Community Care’s Kimsey Helms, who was present for the award ceremony, said food is picked up three days a week from Harvey’s. He explained that a big part of it is produce but also fried chicken and other meats, prepared salads, breads and pastries. “It all stays in the community,” Helms said.
The food is distributed at Community Care’s 118 SW 3rd Street location on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Garry Freeman, also of Community Cares, said Harvey’s is “wonderfully cooperative. They treat us like family.”
Harvey’s Supermarkets is also participating in Second Harvest’s “Take a Bite Out of Hunger” project by selling bags of Washington-grown apples, Kilham said. For every bag sold, FreshFruit Marketing will donate apples in the participating store’s name to Second Harvest. “The more they sell, the more we’ll have to give away,” said Kilham.
Harvey’s is a national donor to Second Harvest.
