GRICE RECOGNIZED BY MEAC:
Former East Gadsden star, Big Bend Player of the Year and national scoring leader Jasmine Grice has one more accolade to add to her resume. The guard earned first-team ALL-MEAC honors this week. Grice is the only FAMU player to earn first-team honors from the men’s or women’s programs.
Currently, the 5’9” junior guard is 8th in the nation at 22.0 points per outing and has scored a total of 639 points going into tournament play. Grice shattered the school’s single season scoring record when she scored her 600th point in a 42-point performance last week against Norfolk State, becoming the first Lady Rattler to score over 100 in a season. It also was the single game record, breaking the old record of 33 points in one game.
BOBCATS CAN’T HOLD ON:
Considering the Munroe Bobcat baseball team returned only one full time starter from a program with three straight district championships and playoff spots, leading district foe Aucilla 7-4 in the top of the 7th seemed too good to be true. And like most things in life, it was. Aucilla scored eight runs in the top of the 7th to take the district win 12-7. Eighth grader Andrew Higdon led Munroe hitters with two hits and scored two runs.
Coach Chris Warfel, in his first season leading the Bobcats, proclaimed the first six innings to be their best of the season. This Saturday the team plays in a spring break tournament at Cottondale, taking on Malone and Poplar Springs.
HURDLING INTO PLACE:
East Gadsden’s Corey Allyne placed first in the 300 hurdles in a multi-team meet last week in Tallahassee. Allyne ran the distance in 44.46 to take the top slot.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
I just love me some Bobby Bowden. Here is an excerpt from an article about Bowden regarding the subject of recruiting young men. “They might not all be my sons, but they were somebody’s son. They deserved the very best I had to give them, and that’s what they got .... you gotta love’em. That’s the most important thing of all. If you are going to coach them, you gotta love ‘em.”
