COACHING CHANGES A’COMIN:
Although there has been no official news release, the scoop around town and on the website footballscoop.com say that East Gadsden head football coach Corey Fuller is heading to Florida A&M University as coach of the defensive secondary. No official word yet on whom will take over the successful Jaguar squad but there are several names being tossed around. Also at the rumor mill is who will be the next head football coach at West Gadsden. Coach Antonio Bradwell will not return in the fall and his replacement has yet to be named.

STREAKIN’ CATS:
The Munroe baseball team has a five-game win-streak going after a solid week’s work entering spring break. The Bobcats started the streak with a win over Tallavana, then key district wins over both John Paul II and FAMU. On Saturday, new coach Chris Warfel and his crew picked up two more wins in a spring break tournament in Cottondale. First, they had the most runs in a 15-10 win over Malone that most resembled a football score. In the second game, a walk issued by the Poplar Springs’ pitcher sent the winning run across for an 8-7 finish.

After taking several days off for break, the Cats will host Cottondale on March 25 in a double-header starting at 5:00 and then travel to Rickards on Thursday.

PHAT STATS:
Several local athletes are in the Top 5 in the Big Bend in statistics.

• TRACK:
East Gadsden’s Corey Allyne continues to hold down the lead in the Big Bend in the 300 hurdles with a time of 44.46
• BASEBALL:
Munroe has three players tops in several categories. Junior Myles Edwards is 5th in RBIs and tied for second in strikeouts with 28, sophomore Bradley Klees is tied for 3rd in doubles, and sophomore Casey Mathers is tied for 4th in stolen bases with six.
• SOFTBALL:
Freshman Jeri Sloan is picking up where departed Munroe senior Haleigh Corbally left off in 2012. Sloan is leading the Big Bend in hitting with a healthy .583 batting average. The right-handed pitcher is 4th in pitching and 3rd in strikeouts with 45. Senior teammate Kaitlyn Sirmons is 3rd in runs scored with 15.

20 YEARS? REALLY?
It’s hard to believe that it was 20 years ago this month that Jim “Jimmy V” Valvano made his emotional speech as he accepted the inaugural Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award at the first annual ESPY Awards. I was, and remain, a huge Jimmy V fan. For old time’s sake, listen to his speech again on Youtube. And remember, “don’t give up, don’t ever give up.”

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
The more I am in athletics, the more this quote haunts me. "The difference between the old ballplayer and the new ballplayer is the jersey. The old ballplayer cared about the name on the front. The new ballplayer cares about the name on the back." – Steve Garvey
