Garbage rates rise for county folks
In a compromise move, county commissioners on Tuesday voted to increase the cost of using the county garbage dropoff program.
Currently it costs residents $50 a year to use the facilities. Those permits will expire at the end of this month.
With the county issuing 1,093 permits, that generated only $54,750 into the program which costs approximately $200,000 a year to operate.
It was suggested that the county go up to $100 a year for user permits. That would generate approximately $110,000, or about half of the actual costs.
County commissioner Sterling Watson made a motion to raise the fee to $100 a year.
That motion got no second.
Commissioner Derrick Price was concerned over how such an increase would impact older citizens on a fixed income.
He made a motion to raise the cost to $75 a year.
That motion failed 3-2.
Chairman Ed Dixon then suggested that the county go up to $100, but to re-evaluate the situation in six months.
A motion was made echoing that recommendation and it passed.
In other business, commissioners agreed to allow the county manager to spend up to $500 on certain items without having to seek approval from the commission.
