Midway city manager Paul Piller
Midway City Manager Paul Piller survived a vote taken to terminate his position after Councilman Charles Willis made a motion and Mayor Pro Tem Ella Barber seconded it.
“I know he’s been doing a good job, but I feel it’s time for a change. This is a vote of no confidence,” said Willis. Barber didn’t explain her desire to see Piller leave.
Piller has been instrumental in negotiating the city out of several hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt for what the federal government said was an improperly used police grant, and for bringing the city back into good graces with state government after years of being in a state of financial emergency. Midway now receives grant funding for roads, parks and other infrastructure improvements as a result.
The council, with Piller's help, has annexed land for neighborhood development and for commercial ventures at Interstate-10, both of which will help the city’s tax base and provide financial stability for the future.
Willis’ motion failed, 4-2.
Mayor Delores Madison was re-elected Mayor for another two-year term, and after a short skirmish to change Mayors Pro Tem, Ella Barber was re-elected to the position.
Midway tabled a request to use the city’s fire station as a meeting space for church and educational services Thursday after Fire Chief Frank Robinson said he feared for the children’s safety around the fire equipment. A representative for Revive to Rebuild said the organization would be teaching children responsibility and the Phenomena of Life, including exposing them to the Holy Word, or Bible, on Sunday mornings.
